Critical Illness Insurance

Critical illness insurance helps Ontario families by paying a tax-free lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a covered condition and survive the waiting period — typically 30 days.

Couple supporting each other – critical illness insurance in Ontario

Critical illness insurance in Ontario: money when you need it most

Thanks to medical advances, more Canadians are surviving serious illnesses. But recovery takes time, and the costs add up: time off work, a partner taking leave, treatments or medications not covered by OHIP, travel to appointments, or simply keeping up with the mortgage.

A critical illness benefit is yours to use however you choose, so you can focus on getting better instead of worrying about money.

Is it right for you?

  • You’re self-employed or have limited sick-leave benefits
  • Your household relies on two incomes
  • You have a family history of serious illness
  • You want to protect savings and retirement funds from being drained
  • You’d want the option of private treatment or extra support at home

Ways to structure coverage

Term critical illness

Coverage for a set period, such as 10 or 20 years, or to age 75. A cost-effective way to protect your working years.

Permanent critical illness

Lifetime coverage with level premiums, for protection that doesn’t end when a term does.

Return-of-premium options

Some plans refund some or all premiums if you never make a claim, subject to the policy’s conditions. We’ll explain the trade-offs.

Good to know

  • Covered conditions, definitions and waiting periods vary by insurer and policy — we’ll compare them side by side.
  • Common covered conditions include cancer (life-threatening), heart attack and stroke; many plans cover 25 or more conditions.
  • Critical illness insurance complements, but doesn’t replace, disability and life insurance.
  • All coverage is subject to the insurer’s underwriting approval.
  • Before you buy critical illness insurance in Ontario, you can confirm any agent’s licence on the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) website.
