Super visa insurance is the private medical insurance your parents or grandparents need to apply for a Canadian Super Visa. We help Ontario families compare plans from Canadian insurers, so your loved ones can visit for longer — protected from the high cost of emergency care.

Super visa insurance for visiting parents and grandparents
The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents stay in Canada for up to five years at a time. To qualify, they must show proof of private medical insurance that meets Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements.
Visitors aren’t covered by OHIP, and a hospital stay or emergency surgery in Canada can be very expensive. The right policy protects your parents’ health and your family’s finances.

IRCC requirements
What super visa insurance must include
To support a Super Visa application, the medical insurance policy must:
- Be issued by a Canadian insurance company, or by an insurer outside Canada that IRCC has approved
- Provide at least $100,000 in emergency coverage
- Cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation
- Be valid for at least one year from each date of entry into Canada
- Be paid in full, or in instalments with a deposit — a quote alone isn’t accepted
- Be shown as proof with the application (border officers can ask to see it too)
Requirements are set by IRCC and can change. Always confirm the current rules on the Government of Canada Super Visa page.
Super visa insurance vs. visitor medical insurance
Super visa insurance
- Required for a Super Visa application
- Minimum $100,000 coverage for at least 1 year
- Must meet IRCC rules to be accepted
- Monthly payment plans available with many insurers
Visitor medical insurance
- For visitors on a visitor visa or eTA, and new arrivals
- Flexible length — from a few days to a full year
- Choose the coverage amount that fits the trip
- Strongly recommended — visitors aren’t covered by OHIP

Visitor medical insurance for Canada
Not applying for a Super Visa? If family or friends are coming to Ontario on a regular visitor visa or eTA, visitor medical insurance covers emergency medical care during their stay — doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions and medical transportation, depending on the plan.
It’s also a smart bridge for new permanent residents and returning Canadians while they wait for provincial health coverage to start.
What affects the price of super visa insurance
- Age of the person being insured
- Coverage amount — $100,000 minimum for a Super Visa, with higher limits available
- Deductible — a higher deductible usually lowers the premium
- Pre-existing medical conditions and whether you want them covered
- Length of the policy and how you choose to pay
Good to know before you buy
- Pre-existing conditions: many plans only cover conditions that have been stable for a set period before the policy starts. We’ll explain each plan’s stability rules.
- Visa refused? Many insurers refund the premium if the Super Visa is refused, but terms vary — we’ll confirm the refund policy in writing before you pay.
- Buy before arrival: policies bought after a visitor arrives in Canada often include a waiting period for illness.
- Carry proof: keep a printed copy of the policy and insurer contact details when travelling.
Common questions
How much does super visa insurance cost?
It depends on age, health, deductible and coverage amount. We compare plans from several Canadian insurers and show you the options side by side, so you can choose the right balance of price and protection.
Can we pay for super visa insurance monthly?
Yes. IRCC accepts policies paid in instalments with a deposit, and many insurers offer monthly plans. We’ll explain how monthly payments work and what happens if a payment is missed.
Does super visa insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Some plans do, if the condition has been stable for a required period. Others exclude it or offer it as an option. Honest answers on the application are essential — we’ll walk you through the questions.
Can I buy visitor insurance after my parents arrive in Canada?
Usually, yes — but a waiting period may apply before illness is covered. Buying before departure gives the best protection.
